District markets are very common in Türkiye, helping citizens meet their fresh fruit, vegetable and other types of food needs and serving as a medium of communication for the people. Supermarket chains increasing in the last 20 years have caused the district markets to lose their importance. However, this restricted the citizens’ capability to access healthy and affordable fruits and vegetables.
This program we launched enabled us to regulate district markets with new standards, making them accessible for all groups in the society especially including the disabled, mothers and older people. To facilitate access to food in these markets, we gave places to producers for selling their products not only from İstanbul, but also from other cities.
Our markets became a point for many producers that do not know each other both for meeting with each other and with cooperatives operating in the city in the area of fresh fruit and vegetable production. In addition, they also achieved carbon footprint reduction through the sale of the food produced in the city.
We are helping our citizens in need through our Food Bank program which we are launching as of 2022 when the food security challenge began becoming a global problem.
This program we are launching together with TİDER, the Global Foodbanking Network’s (GFN) first authorized member in Türkiye, is based on collecting, the donated food, clothing, cleaning and hygiene products, sorting, storing and distributing them to people in need.
Our program aims at the provision of all types of donated and granted foods beneficial for human health, storing them under appropriate conditions and delivering them to families in need. The program has been founded to provide the low-income families that cannot procure the amount of food they need to sustain their lives under normal circumstances, resulting in undernourishment, with food, cleaning products and clothing aids.
